The small town of Cann River with a population of about 200, is located beside the river of the same name at the junction of the Princes Highway and the Monaro Highway, in the Shire of East Gippsland.

Through the generosity of the local community, and the Shire of East Gippsland the former Cann River Rainforest Caravan Park is now a free camp, where travelers may stay for up to 48 hours.

On route from Cape Conran to Mallacoota, we rested here for two days.

Running town water, toilets and cold showers are provided in the well-maintained grounds which are on the bank of the Cann River.

An excellent walkway joins the campground to the Cann River bridge, enabling campers a very pleasant and easy stroll into the town, where hopefully they will part with a few shillings to support the local businesses.

A basic camp kitchen offers shelter to campers during inclement weather.

Where’s Mallie, you ask?

This is a great initiative by the local community and the Shire of East Gippsland to offer free camping at the former Cann River Rainforest Caravan Park. The facilities provided are well-maintained and it is a nice spot for travelers to rest and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
