The township of Genoa is only a few kilometres from the New South Wales border when travelling the Princes Highway from Melbourne to Sydney. Twenty-two kilometres inland from Mallacoota, the township looks all but totally past its used by date with the Post Office, Service Station, Hotel and the Cafe “Berlin” all looking forlorn and shut up.

Regardless of outward appearance, the good people of the community see fit to provide travelers with a very spacious, well maintained free campground complete with older toilets, running water, a clothes line, barbeque shelters and a kids playground.

Despite being past its heyday, Genoa has a community park with tennis courts and a barbeque area. In 1972 the earliest fossil trackway of primitive tetrapods was found in the Genoa River Gorge, dating back 350 million years.

The Genoa Camp Park is connected to the town via the historic bridge over the Genoa River. Built in 1928, travelers on the Princes Highway crossed on horseback and early motorized transportation to arrive at the once thriving town.

After the recent rain showers, a break in the weather afforded us the opportunity to visit the beautiful flowing Genoa Creek Falls, a few kilometres back towards Melbourne.
