Newman, Western Australia

Newman, founded in the 1960s, was established as a mining town to support the burgeoning iron ore industry in the region. Today, it is home to the world’s largest open cut iron ore mine and it serves as a hub for mining operations and provides essential services for the thousands of workers who call the area home. During the winter, scores of escapees from the southern winters call Newman’s Yurlu Caravan Park home, although by the time we arrive, the park was almost empty.

Newman’s Yurlu Caravan Park, almost empty as the tourist season closes.

After our week in the bush around Karijini, we enjoyed being able to use our air conditioner in the caravan park as the temperature in the East Pilbara is now hovering around 37/38 degrees Celius during the afternoons. A good chance also to stock up on groceries as Newman has a large Woolworths Supermarket as well as an IGA in a new shopping complex which was built by BHP.

The highlight of our stay was a tour of BHP’s Mount Whaleback Iron Ore Mine. Check it out below.
