Griffith, New South Wales

Griffith, a major regional city in the Riverina region of New South Wales, was established as part of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) project, which aimed to transform western New South Wales into a thriving agricultural hub. Declared a town on 4 August 1916 then proclaimed a city in 1987.
Griffith is a powerhouse of Australian agriculture, producing a diverse range of crops including citrus, grapes, rice, and nuts. Poultry farming is also a significant industry.
The region’s prosperity is reflected in the cities vibrant shopping areas, which offers a mix of boutique stores, specialty shops, and modern shopping centres.
A very multicultural region, the city has a population of about 28,000 of which approximately 60% claim Italian heritage. Other larger ethic groups are Pacific Islanders and Indians.

COBAR, New South Wales

After a lunch break and short walk around Hillston, we continued north to setup camp at Glenhope Bush Camp, six kilometres east of Cobar off the Barrier Highway. (See the short youtube video below).

Nowadays Cobar, still a mining town, is a lovely, neat and tidy place welcoming visitors to explore the district and discover the interesting their history.

Charcoal Safe were the fridges of the pioneering days. Sitting in an open space allowing air to move around the water-soaked charcoal lining it’s walls and the food inside. Cooling was sufficient to set jelly for Christmas dinner!
Drover's Pantry at the Great Cobar Museum
Made from a hollow Kurrajong tree this drover’s pantry stored non-perishable provision such as flour, rice and tea for boundary riders and stockmen. Lined with calico and fitted with shelves to keep food off the ground and safe from ants.
