The Last Leg – Cunnamulla to Bendigo

Hillston

After crossing the border into New South Wales and camping a night at Glenhope Bush Camp Cobar, we continued south to reach Hillston, resting there at the caravan park for a few days. Hillston is a lovely township, built literally on the banks of the Lachlan River. Hillston is named after William Ward Hill who established the first hotel there in 1863. Sadly, William died four years later of “exhaustion from intemperance”! Perhaps an occupational hazard.

Carrathool Bridge Free Camp

Our first totally “FREE CAMP” for the trip. A large established camping area off Carrathool Road and beside the Murrumbidgee River. An interesting feature being the old bascule lift span bridge which open in 1924 and closed in 2019 when the new bridge beside it opened.

A peaceful location with lots of bird life and plenty of space for campers.

Yanga National Park, Balranald NSW

Camping banks of the Murrumbidgee, allowed us a few days to explore Balranald and Yanga National Park. Yanga Station, originally a very large sheep grazing property was purchased by the government in 2005 to create the National Park.

Historic Yanga Homestead, built around Yanga Lake is well worth a visit. It’s very hard to imagine today, but Yanga Lake was once a commercial fishery!

Once a shining pride and joy at Yanga Homestead, this old Fordson tractor sits forlornly amongst other rusting farm implements with Yanga Lake in the background.

Green Lake, Banyan, Victoria

Located at Banyan, between Sea Lake and Berriwillock, Green Lake Regional Park is a popular camping spot. The Lake, nowadays filled from the Murray River, sits within 320 hectares of mallee bush. After enduring a day of near gale force winds, we enjoy the locality for three more days, Jack pleasantly recalling a thrilling speed boat ride on the Lake with his Uncle Ged in the early 1960s.
