Goodbye Northern Territory – Hello Western Australia!

Leaving Katherine, now traveling in a south-westerly direction we covered the five hundred and fifteen kilometre journey to Kununurra over two days. After stopping for lunch at a roadside rest stop, we pulled into the Victoria River Roadhouse to top up with diesel.

Travelling along the Victoria Highway (again National Highway No.1) at about three o’clock, Mallie spotted a few caravans in a large gravel pit some distance off the road, and we decide to join them for the night.

After a very quiet and peaceful sleep the sun rose on the happy gravel pit community of about a dozen caravans and campervans.

Although an enormous variety of caravans and campers are travelling the northern Australian outback at this time of year, vintage caravans are as rarely seen in this part of the country.

Our young neighbours in the gravel pit had a lovely renovated 1968 10-foot Franklin Caravan

Hitting the road again we continued westward before pulling up for a rest and look around at the very popular Saddle Campground.

Well before lunch we made the border which about half and hour’s drive from Kununurra.

  1. there doesn’t look too much room in the old caravan. I imagine it would get very hot inside that size van. Nice place Kununurra.
