KFC – Kimberley Free Camping!

Departing Kununurra bound for the northwest coast of Western Australia, our journey would cover over one thousand kilometres in the next five days.

Spring Creek 24 Hour Rest Stop.

Two hundred and fifty kilometres along the Great Northern Highway, Spring Creek is one of two free camps in the Ord River locality. A large, level sealed area with toilets and shelters it is conveniently located opposite the turnoff to Purnululu National Park. Camping in the nearby bushland along Spring Creek is also available.

Leycesters 24 Hour Rest Stop

A few kilometres down the road from Spring Creek is Leycesters Rest Stop, situated alongside the Ord River. As well as a sealed section with toilets, there is an abundance of bush camping too, with the added bonus of having easy access to the clear flowing waters of the Ord River.

The morning after visiting Purnululu National Park, we drove on with a general westerly bearing to reach Halls Creek and refueled with diesel. Sadly, due to the high crime rate in this area, like most people we erred on the side of caution and did not stop to look around the town.

Mary Pool 24 Hour Rest Stop

Although one hundred kilometres away, Mary Pool Rest Area is also referred to as the Hall Creek Camping Area! Located beside the Mary River just off the Great Northern Highway at Kupartiya, this popular bush camp could cater for almost one hundred caravans.

Alongside the large pools of water the various and interesting rocks and rock formations can be fun to explore.

A large variety of rocks smooth from the wet season torrents.

Several large deep waterholes provide water for the grazing cattle which wander through the campgrounds from time to time.

Ellendale Station Lake

Refueling at Fitzroy Crossing we traveled on into the West Kimberlely assisted by a handy south-eastly wind to arrive at the Ellendale Station Lake Free Camp. This large camping area is private property and access is very generously allowed by the owners. Fortunately, the travelling public in this part of Australia are doing the right thing and keeping the lagoon and surroundings clean and tidy.

The station cattle roam freely around the camping area, one older cow a frequent visitor with an acquired taste for carrots!

Coming Up Next

Completing the final two hours of our journey, we arrived in plenty of time to see the sunset over King Sound.
