Tucked away in the remote wilderness of Western Australia’s Pilbara lies this hidden gem that promises adventure, natural beauty, and a connection to the ancient landscape of the continent.

After leaving Tom Price we travelled about an hour to a large free camp under Mt Bruce on the doorstep of Karijini National Park.

From this base, which we shared with billions of bush flies, we had a fairly easy drive to Joffre Gorge, Karijini National Park.

Unknown to many, pockets of irrigation farming can be found in northern Western Australia such as about two kilometres from our camp site under Mt Bruce.

One of the most striking features of Karijini National Park is its remarkable geology. Over millions of years, erosion has carved out deep, narrow gorges through layers of ancient rock, creating a labyrinth of dramatic landscapes. Each gorge has its unique character, with towering cliffs, crystal-clear pools, and cascading waterfalls. Dales Gorge next on our agenda!

After calling in to the Visitors Centre and setting up camp at Dales Campground, a swim at Fern Pool was very much the order of the day.

Following a string of hot windy days, we were blessed with a lovely morning to hike around Dales Gorge.

Visitors can embark on challenging hikes and descents into these gorges, often requiring a degree of fitness and agility. Walking along the narrow paths, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views and the chance to take a refreshing dip in the pristine pools.

Please watch the Youtube video of our wonderful experience hiking the “class 4” trail around Dales Gorge.
Next: A few days in the bush at Wonmanna Gorge.
